The Long Field

One field in Perthshire, watched for a year. Nothing much happens, at considerable length, and it is the best thing on this list.

About
this book

Alasdair Mure has farmed the same 340 acres since 1987. The Long Field is about eleven of those acres, over one year, and it is deliberately the least eventful book we have published.

There are chapters on soil temperature, on a hare, on the economics of a bad silage cut, and on the four days in February when nothing whatsoever occurred. Mure is entirely unsentimental about farming and correspondingly convincing when he is moved.

It has sold steadily since 2021 without ever appearing on a list, which is our favourite kind of book.

“The anti-nature-book: no epiphanies, no healing, no walking away from a city job. Just a man who knows a field.”
