The Bardsey sisters return to their grandmother’s house on the Dorset heath in the summer of 1997, and again in 2011, and again in 2023. Each section is narrated by a different sister and each contradicts the last on points of fact that ought not to be in dispute.

Ellington never adjudicates. There is no final section that tells you which of them is right, and the novel is considerably better for it — this is a book about how a family metabolises an event, not about the event.

Sunniva Holt gives the three sisters three distinct registers without resorting to accents, which is the hardest thing in this job and is why she has narrated for us since 2019.
